Podcast - 1951 Down Place: Episode #005 - Captain Kronos-Vampire Hunter

This is the only podcast alive feared by the walking dead. This is 1951 Down Place. This month, the Down Placers spend some quality vampire-hunting time with Hammer’s good captain when they discuss Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter (dir. Brian Clemens). It’s a film that lives in the middle of both Casey’s and Derek’s Top Five lists. Will it find a home in Scott’s Top Five list as well? You’ll have to listen to find out. You’ll also have to listen to find out why Casey and Derek are now a little scared of Scott.

Getting back into the swing . . .

I've been trying to get everything back to what passes for normal around here after the holidays, my grandfather's passing, the funeral, getting back to Oregon, Brenda's further treatments for her rheumatoid arthritis, bringing back the Mail Order Zombie podcast, etc., etc., etc. I haven't posted too much here this month outside of my annual What I Read and What I Watched lists.

This past Thursday, we relaunched our Mail Order Zombie podcast. Over the past few months, I've been going over several different ways to bring the show back - going back to weekly, a once-a-month-dedicated episode for post-apocalyptic movies/media content, more segments, more polish, more work, more time away from "real life," etc., etc., etc. Eventually, Bren and I decided that in order to better facilitate our other away-from-the-microphone goals and projects, Mail Order Zombie is going to be a biweekly show. (Of course, our monthly Dead Letter Awards show will be a more produced show, and that will be in March.)

The monthly 1951 Down Place podcast has been a lot of fun, and I don't see its monthly shcedule changing any time soon. I'm really enjoying talking about Hammer Films with my friends Casey and Scott, and that's not going to change any time sooon.

On the writing-front, I'm regrouping and getting my head screwed back on straight after the Arizona trip. I set a game plan for myself for the Mail Order Zombie hiatus, and while I didn't follow that game plan (for a number of different reasons), I'm okay with where I'm at now with my various works-in-progress.

In fact, if you'll excuse me for a moment, I need to work on one of those projects right now.

Christmas 2011

I'm a little behind on a few things (I hope that's been understandable), so I didn't get a chance to post much here at Plan D around the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. It's time to play a little catch up.

I had an awesome Christmas.

Brenda and I have a Christmas tradition - we stay at home and enjoy spending time together. That's it. It's nothing big. No huge production. It's nice and quiet and, while I can't speak for Bren, it's a holiday I get to spend with my favorite person (and the cats and this year, we got to hang out with great friends via XBOX kinect, too).

Gift-wise, I found that I am truly lucky to have such caring friends and family. And while I appreciate things like the awesome movies, the "Grave Robbers from Outer Space" card game, the books and fun monster stuff, I was definitely touched by the sentiment behind the giving of these gifts more than anything else.

(Also, since Amazon failed to include any kind of note in the package including the Sugar Hill DVD, I just assumed it came from my mother . . . who was genuinely confused when I thanked her for the "blaxploitation zombie flick" she sent. We all realized later it came from my old friend Mike, and it makes a LOT more sense that he sent me that movie instead!)

I hope everyone out there had a safe and warm holiday season, received more than you deserved and saw the end of 2011 treating you well.

Writing about my grandfather

I love my wife.

A few days after Christmas, my grandfather passed away. He's someone I looked up to, someone I always wanted to impress, someone whose boots I don't know if I can ever fill, and someone I'll forever miss. (I'm sure I'll talk about him more on Plan D over the next few months.)

I wanted to speak at his funeral. I was considering it even before we arrived in Arizona (that side of my family lives in the Phoenix area), and days before the funeral, my mother told me there would be an opportunity for people to speak at the service. I had some thoughts about what I would prepare, shuffling through all the memories I have about my grandfather, all the experiences we shared, eveything he (directly and indirectly) taught me, but all of what I wanted to say was weighed down by my realizing that the first piece of writing I'm completing in the new year was something about my dead grandfather.

It was really getting to me, and I think it was the day before the actual service when I told Brenda as much.

She told me I was being "morbid" and helped me to think about what I was doing in a different way. I wasn't writing something sad, depressing or morbid. She said, "You're writing an homage to your grandfather."

And that made all the difference.

A lot of people have given me and my family love and support while we have gone through the process to saying goodbye to my grandfather, and I appreciate you all. Thank you so much for your kind words, your thoughts, your hugs and your love.

And thank you, Brenda, for helping me find a moment of light in honoring my Grampa.
